If you play from a bunker, you may notice your ball buried deeply into the sand.If you execute your shot correctly, your clubface would have less loft at contact, and your call will launch at a lower angle, creating more distance. Depending on how you play, this position can also offer you alternatives between lining the ball up in the center of your stance and moving the ball rearward in your stance. Instead, the club would skim over the lies’ surface, allowing you more flexibility to address the ball better. The angled sole that this design produces helps lift the leading edge off the ground at the bottom of the swing, thus keeping the club from digging into soft lies like mud, sand, and thick grasses. And more weight brings more momentum, and since the weight is focused on the low and forward end of the club, you can expect higher launches. The design typically requires more material, and this can increase the weight of the club’s head.On the other hand, the sand wedge features a design that positions the club’s sole at an angle to the ground when placed in the same position described above. This angle allows the lead edge to get between the ball and the ground more easily. The design of most other irons features a sole perpendicular to the shaft, which makes their sole roughly parallel to the ground when a player is not taking a swing. One of the most significant differences between this club and most others is the bounce. Only in a few rare situations would you find some pitching wedges shorter. This shaft size is the shortest in the back. Sand wedges are usually designed to feature a very short shaft, usually between 84 cm and 91 cm. Of course, lob wedges have their loft degree at 60 and above. However, with the invention of the lob wedge, that has changed. Traditionally, it had the highest loft at 55-58 degrees. Most modern sand wedges would weigh around 40 ounces. The reinvention of sand wedges mean that it has become the heaviest iron in a player’s bag. The sand wedge became popular in 1932 after Gene Sarazen had success with the newly designed club for sand play.Īpart from sandy play, many golfers have adopted the club for playing in other soft lies like soggy grounds, thick roughs, and muddy ground. It’s this sole that provides it the bounce that allows the clubhead to glide through the sand instead of digging in. Otherwise known as a sand iron, a sand wedge is a golf club designed to get out of sand bunkers.Ĭompared to most other types of wedges, the sand wedge has the widest sole. A measured sample volume of the fluid flows under the influence of gravity between two etched lines on the tube, and the time of flow is recorded. The petroleum refining industry is a major user of capillary viscometers (Figure 2), which like the flow cups, also measure kinematic viscosity. This type of measurement, where gravity is the driving force, is referred to as kinematic viscosity. As the ink level in the cup goes down, the shear rate at the orifice decreases because the weight of the ink remaining in the cup is less and less. The shearing action on the ink takes place at the orifice on the bottom of the cup. Returning to the cup method, note that this type of test uses the force of gravity to drain the ink out of the cup. This analytical procedure for simulating the shearing action with an instrument is the key to predicting flow behavior and leads to the selection of an appropriate viscometer to perform the test work that is required. For inks, the use of a rotational viscometer running at different speeds can simulate, in part, what is happening to the ink during transfer to a substrate. The “shearing action” that the material will undergo is the analysis that we want to focus on. When testing inks, or any material that flows, it is important to think about how the material will be processed or handled when in use. The problem turned out to be a matter of understanding “shear rate” and how it can affect the viscosity of the ink. But the cup method could not always discriminate successfully between inks that proved acceptable and those that were marginal or outright poor performers. This became one of the earliest quality control (QC) tests that checked systematically for viscosity in a quantifiable way. The cups were relatively inexpensive and anyone working the press could easily learn how to make the measurement. Printers developed a more scientific approach to viscosity measurement by using cups with holes in the bottom to measure how much time it would take to drain the ink (Figure 1). This rubbing action was, in essence, a viscosity test, the objective being to tell how much resistance was felt between thumb and forefinger. There was a time when pressmen could tell by rubbing an ink between their fingers as to how well it would perform “on press”. When the ink is too thick, smearing may result during printing too thin and there can be serious fading of the printed image. The printing ink industry is one of the best examples to illustrate the need for viscosity measurement. The only alternative in these situations is to find the proper authority at the manufacturer and obtain the relevant test details. To perform a valid verification check and confirm that the material is within specification requires a duplication of the test method used by the manufacturer. Data sheets for some polymer solutions, for example, may include a discrete number like 4,500 centipoise (cP), but no further information about how the measurement was made, not even the test temperature at which the polymer was measured. Raw materials in the chemical process industries (CPI) usually have a reported viscosity value on the data sheet that accompanies the product. Experiments have shown that the viscosity values obtained at 0.1 or 0.01 rpm can be several orders of magnitude higher than the one recorded at 20 rpm. When pumping asphalt, the startup torque required to get the pump going initially suggests that a second viscosity test at a much lower rotational speed makes sense. However, this straightforward single-point test does not provide the complete picture for asphalt flow behavior. Record the viscosity value, make sure that it falls within prescribed maximum and minimum limits, and then report whether the number passes or fails. The standard test method for pumpability, according to ASTM D4402, is to use a regular viscosity (RV) torque rotational viscometer at 20 rpm or a low viscosity (LV) instrument at 12 rpm. An important concept, sometimes forgotten, is that a material’s viscosity is not a single-point measurement, but often depends on a number of factors. This article reacquaints the reader with the basic concepts and terminology for viscosity and addresses techniques to quantify it. The bottom line is to come up with ways to measure viscosity so that you can quantify whether a material will flow the way it needs to. For handlers of all materials that flow, either while being processed or in an end-use, it is important to think about the materials’ flow characteristics. To be brief, viscosity is resistance to flow. Most engineers know what viscosity is, but may have trouble explaining it. That’s looking from the back of the room towards the entrance. Thirty machines lined up along a single wall is an impressive sight: Walking into the arcade, you are greeted with the first row of pinball machines. It’s hard to imagine that Sarah owns many more cabinets in storage than those on the floor of the property: The building is large, and I can honestly say it is packed to the rafters. The arcade is located in an unassuming strip mall located just off the main road through Pelham. Entry is free, and visitors can buy tokens in incremental amounts from vending machines located throughout the arcade, and each machine has a price per play. Sarah’s business model is slightly different to most pay-on-entry arcades, in that she still uses the token system. It’s this focus on the customer experience that makes this place a must-visit. I’m an annual visitor and can honestly say I’ve rarely found a machine there that wasn’t working. Aside from the selection of machines, what sets this place apart from every other arcade I’ve visited, is Sarah’s commitment to making sure that everything is in solid, playable condition. Set up five years ago by operator Sarah St John, the arcade houses without question, THE most impressive lineup of pinballs and classic video arcade games I’ve ever seen under one roof. So if you’re in the area, you must turn off the I93 and make a point of visiting this fabulous arcade. A short drive North of Boston, this arcade is ostensibly on the way to Funspot further up into New Hampshire. One of the highlights of my annual trips to the USA, is dropping by Pinball Wizard Arcade located in Pelham, New Hampshire. The drone continues circling overhead as people move toward the scene of the explosion. The drone video zooms out as the explosion recedes, with smoke pouring out of the destroyed car. Thirty-three seconds later, the car vanishes beneath a bright fireball. At least two or three people are seen in the grainy video milling about the car. Seven minutes and seven seconds into the video, the words “LRD LASE DES” appear, indicating a laser designator has identified and ranged the target. About five minutes into the 15-minute video, the car reaches its final destination and begins slowly reversing into a parking spot. In the longest of the three videos, the car is seen making its way along the streets of Kabul in grainy black and white footage. Steven Kwon, the president of Nutrition and Education International, criticized the decision to not punish any US military personnel, saying, “When the Pentagon absolves itself of accountability, it sends a dangerous and misleading message that its actions were somehow justified, increasing security risks and making evacuation even more urgent.” No one has been held accountable for the mistake, even as Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has promised an increased focus on holding the military to a higher standard on avoiding civilian casualties and harm. A subsequent Air Force review of the circumstances around the strike found “no violation of law, including the law of war.” Ahmadi had applied for a special immigrant visa and intended to bring his family to the United States.Īpproximately three weeks after the strike, the military acknowledged it was a tragic mistake that had killed 10 innocent civilians. In reality, the military was tracking Zamarai Ahmadi, an Afghan who worked for Nutrition and Education International, a nongovernmental organization focused on food security. With ongoing threats of another attack, the US strike cell believed it was tracking an ISIS-K member from a terrorist hideout as he made his way through the city over the course of eight hours. Only three days earlier, an ISIS-K suicide bomber had killed 13 US service members and dozens of Afghans at Abbey Gate, the key entry point to the airport. The Pentagon defended the strike at first, claiming it had killed an ISIS-K operative planning an imminent attack on US forces during the final days of the evacuation and withdrawal from Afghanistan. The newly released videos show the view from above Kabul as the military tracked a white Toyota Corolla through parts of the city, believing that it was an ISIS-K car laden with explosives and building a case for targeting it with a preemptive strike. The US military released videos Wednesday of the botched August 29 drone strike in Kabul that killed 10 Afghan civilians, including seven children.
